RCSS News & Events

Image

This Sunday our week begins with "Gaudete Sunday." Gaudete means "rejoice" in Latin. The spirit of joy comes from the words of Paul, "The Lord is near." This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose-colored, and the rose-colored vestments often used at the Eucharist.

We begin this third week of Advent asking to feel the joy that comes from knowing our Lord's coming to us is near. In these precious days ahead, we are praying, longing, hoping in the background of our everyday lives. His mission is to the poor, the brokenhearted, prisoners and captives. His mission is for us. It is "good news," full of healing, liberty and release. It is right to give our God thanks and praise.

"BEAT THE HEAT" CAMPAIGN

It's not too late to support the "Beat the Heat" Campaign! This campaign raises funds for the air-conditioning and new floor installation in the gym. The project began construction this week and will continue throughout Christmas break. As you know, the gym is the only place large enough to accommodate our entire student body. An upgrade of this kind to our gym facility is not merely aesthetically beneficial, but ensures the safety of our athletes as they practice and play. Your gift will not only benefit our athletes and spectators, but the entire school community and generations to come.

STUDENT GMAIL ACCOUNTS

Ramona has added another level of security, Gaggle Safety Management, to our students' Gmail and Google Classroom accounts.

In addition to the existing strong filter on our Internet, students' school-issued Gmail and Google classroom accounts are now filtered to identify inappropriate content or potential safety issues. The Gaggle safety management tools and a professionally trained team evaluate content in email, documents, shared files, images, and photos, 24/7/365. The team alerts the school of potentially harmful or inappropriate content or unsafe situations.

In addition to providing another level of safety for our students, this safety tool is also part of our ongoing commitment to help our students develop good digital citizenship habits. Please contact Ms. Mansell (mmansell@ramonaconvent.org) if you have any questions.

UGANDAN DIRECTOR FOR YOUTH MINISTRY VISITS RAMONA

Image

On Tuesday, December 5, the Sophomore Theology classes welcomed Fr. Seskabira Deusdebit, the Director for Youth Ministry in the Masaka Diocese of Uganda. As a dedicated young priest born and raised in his diocese, Fr. Deus oversees 105 Youth Ministers and an orphanage for over 300 children. Fr. Deus gave our students a glimpse of the Church where the faith community is the main source of strength and solidarity when meeting life's challenges due to poverty and the lack of basic resources such as water and medicine. His perspective challenged everyone to be thankful for what we have and generous in what we can give.

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT: FORENSICS

Image

Forensics students have been learning to identify a missing person using bones. By identifying a specific bone and measuring its length, students are able to estimate a individual's height and possibly identify which bones may belong to which missing person in a mystery. The differences in male and female skeletons are helpful in identifying the gender of the missing person. Did you know that an adult female Caucasian's height can be estimated using the following formula: Estimated height = (2.32 * femur length) + 65.53?

AUTHOR EVELYN GONZALEZ IS COMING TO RAMONA

Meet Mrs. Gonzalez and get your book signed by her on Wednesday, January 10th at our Author Assembly!

When not writing or conducting book talks, Evelyn Gonzalez spends her time with her other love - being an elementary school teacher (for over 25 years). She is the mother of two young adults, and she is excited to share her "new baby" - her debut YA novel, The 16 Rule, with readers around the world. She enjoys "encouraging other writers to pursue their dreams."

Copies of The 16 Rule are available for purchase for only $15.

"Fifteen-year-old Lucy Aceves lives in a cultural tug-of-war. She wants nothing more than to live a normal American teenage life. Lucy attends summer school for one reason only... to meet a boy. When seventeen year-old Evan Ellis catches her eye, she becomes obsessed with finding out as much as she can about him. She plots and schemes to gain his attention by wearing clothing and make-up her parents do not approve of. Lucy has never defied her parents; but, when her father's disapproval and lack of trust hinder her ability to keep her secret, she is ultimately faced with a difficult decision: Should she continue to sneak around behind her parents' back and suffer the consequences if she gets caught? Or should she obey their 'Sixteen Rule' (and Latin beliefs and expectations) and gain back their trust?"

"FIRE" SUPPORT FOR THE WILDFIRES IN VENTURA, SANTA BARBARA AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES

Archbishop José H. Gomez asks all people of faith and good-will to join him in offering prayers and support for all our brothers and sisters affected by the wildfires in Ventura, Santa Barbara and LA Counties:

"Friends, join me please in praying for our brothers and sisters who are facing devastating fires and high winds. Let us pray for the families and their homes and also for the firefighters and rescue workers. May God keep them all safe and put an end to these fires."

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is providing support to the communities affected by the fires through Catholic Charities of Los Angeles and our local parishes and schools. A special fund has been established to help those impacted by the fires. Donations can be made at www.archla.org/fires.
