A rare date coincidence has us in a bit of a conundrum this Valentine's Day. Today also happens to be Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The two haven't fallen on the same day since 1945. While Valentine's Day is typically a day of romance and indulgence, Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and sacrifice. Historically, it's a day of fasting. Catholics are urged to abstain from meat. So what is a good Christian to do? It's a lovely convergence this year because the season of Lent is not really meant to be six weeks of suffering but really a time of reflection that we've received God's love. Receiving ashes is a call to return to God with all our hearts! Both days contain the message of love.

HOMELESSNESS SOLIDARITY RETREAT

Eighteen Ramona students recently spent the night in cardboard boxes on the Ramona campus in solidarity with the homeless for the Homelessness Solidarity Retreat. They also heard the testimony of Sister Judy Vaughn, CSJ, founder and director of Alexandria House, a shelter for women and children in Los Angeles. Sister Judy brought a guest with her who told her own story of homelessness and presented her poem she wrote of her experience as spoken word. Students woke up at 5:00 a.m. the next morning to serve breakfast to the homeless at the Midnight Mission on Skid Row with Sister Anna, Mrs. Alvarez, and SNJM Associate Sharon Corbitt. Everyone walked away from the experience with new eyes and a deeper understanding of the issue of homelessness.

MRS. SZYMANSKI AND MS. MANSELL LEAD CONFERENCE SESSION

As leaders in education in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Ms. Mansell and Mrs. Szymanski recently led a workshop at the first Archdiocese Data Symposium. Their presentation highlighted the intentional ways Ramona uses data to analyze student progress and continually evaluate and improve our program.

RAMONA GOES TO WORK LUNCHTIME SERIES WELCOMES BACK CYNTHIA ZEPEDA '08

Cynthia Zepeda graduated from Ramona in 2008. After Ramona, she attended California State University, Fullerton and declared as a Business Major with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. She admits that her decision to pursue a career that relied solely on her hard work, motivation, and ability to take risks provided her with a lot of ups and downs. Now, years later, she is achieving her dream as an entrepreneur in the health and fitness industry.

SOMETHING BIG IS HAPPENING - AT RAMONA AND BEYOND

We're going to share how incredible Ramona and others in the Archdiocese of LA are. But before that happens, we need some feedback (and there are great prizes).

First - we need to hear from YOU. The goal of the survey is to better understand what you value the most in your daughter's education, and the results will be used to help understand why you chose Ramona and to make improvements for the future.

Second - we need to hear from your friends, especially your peer parents with school-aged children who do not attend a
Catholic School. We need to understand what they value in the education of their children. Please text and email this survey to your friends, and share it on your social media channels.

If our school is one of the top 3 schools to have the most Catholic parents in the LA, Santa Barbara, or Ventura counties
complete the survey - we could win a grant up to $3,000. So, please share with any Catholic parent in our area you can
think of!

We greatly appreciate your support!

P.S. One family will receive a $500 Amazon Gift card for completing the full survey - that could be you! Thank you for your feedback!
