NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COLLEGE TOUR

Mr. Chavarria would like to thank all parents who made our Northern California College Tour a success.  As many of you know, there is no better way to get a feel for a college community and campus than by visiting one.  We hope your daughters walked away more confident about the different types of colleges and universities that are just a short distance from Southern California and have a better outlook as to what type of campus they hope to pursue. Please encourage your daughters to take advantage of the numerous resources and opportunities, such as the College Tour program, that they can experience through the College Counseling Department.  Please stay tuned for the next college tour that will be taking place in the Spring of 2017. For more details, please contact Mr. Chavarria at achavarria@ramonaconvent.org.

READERS ARE LEADERS: BOOK CLUB SPOTLIGHT

The Ramona Book Club recently hosted a visit with Adriana Sauceda, the Teen Services Librarian from Alhambra Civic Center Library.

Ms. Sauceda shared her current list of favorite YA novels, and encouraged Book Club members to apply their leadership skills by joining TAB-the Teen Advisory Board.  Students also learned about a vast array of activities for teens, such as a Bookmark Contest with a $100 prize and free jewelry-making workshops.

Students were happy to gain information about the many service opportunities, from tutoring children to assisting with the Summer Reading Program.

One of the highlights of Ms. Sauceda's visit was selecting some of advanced reader copies she brought as gifts!  Book Club members were thrilled to browse through the many titles that have not yet been released by publishers for mass distribution.

Students who would like to obtain a library card, join the Teen Advisory Board, or volunteer at the Alhambra Civic Center Library, are encouraged to chat with Ms. Sauceda at Ramona's Service Fair this Wednesday or to stop by the Ramona Library to pick up some handouts and Ms. Sauceda's contact information.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT: THE INTERNATIONAL CULTURE SOCIETY (ICS)

Image

On Tuesday, September 13th, the International Culture Society (ICS) welcomed special guest speakers to their lunch time meeting. Ramona alumnae Celina Valencia and Karina Garcia from the Class of 2011 shared their experience of living abroad in Spain and Morocco.  The presentations highlighted their experience of culture shock as they adjusted to the different customs, life styles, and language barriers encountered during their stay. Club members were enriched by their stories, which revealed a deep respect for the people and cultures they encountered.  This month Celina Valencia will return to Spain to teach ESL and to play on a second division national Soccer team.  We wish her all the best!

Each year at Enrollment Night, the freshmen and new students are given a white rose, symbolizing the beginning of their high school journey.  Yesterday at the International Cultural Society Meeting, our new International students received their white rose from the officers of Club.

ICS will continue to explore the cultures of the world during club meetings on Tuesdays Week One. All students are welcome to attend!

SAT AND PSAT RESOURCES

Image

Students are encouraged to access free, online resources that they can use to supplement their SAT and PSAT practice.

According to Mrs. Halina Szymanski, Associate Principal of Curriculum and Faculty Development, "The 11th grade PSAT score matters!  High scores can lead to recognition as a National Merit Scholar or as part of the National Hispanic Recognition program.  These designations often lead to college scholarships." We have had students who were National Merit Scholars go on to attend prestigious schools such as Stanford and Harvard.

Do your best to prepare for the October exam! Click here to learn more about what resources are offered to help students prepare for the SAT and PSAT exams and what resources Mrs. Tegtmeier and Ms. Chou recommend.

You may also visit the Library page on our website to learn more about additional resources that will help you succeed!
