THANKSGIVING PRAYER

Dear Lord,

Today we give thanks

For our many blessings

As we pray for those in need.

We give thanks

For our family and friends

As we pray for those who are lonely.

We give thanks for our freedoms

As we pray for those who are oppressed.

We give thanks for our good health

As we pray for those who are ill.

We give thanks for our comfort and prosperity

As we share our blessing with others.

On this day of Thanksgiving,

May the love of God enfold us,

The peace of God dwell within us,

And the joy of God uplift us. Amen

CHRISTMAS CALENDAR

By now you have received your mailing about Ramona's traditional Christmas calendar game –

Some call it a raffle; some call it bingo; we call it fun – and the chance to win a prize every day during December.  Where else can you get 31 raffle tickets for $20.  Simply complete the form and return it with your $20.  You may enter as many times as you wish.  Feel free to invite other family and friends to enter too.  Forms may be downloaded from the website and copied.  Thanksgiving is a wonderful day to invite family members to join the fun.  While you may enter any time during December, the earlier you enter the more chances to win you have.  You can also win more than once…if your name is drawn early in the month, you get that prize – and your ticket is put back in so that you have a chance at the big prize on Christmas Day.  Join the fun!

WARNING SLIPS

Warning slips to clear students for semester exams will be distributed right after Thanksgiving Vacation (11/29).  All accounts (tuition, parent pledge, athletic fees, etc.) must be brought up to date before students are allowed to take semester exams.  To avoid a warning slip, please take care of financial obligations before Thanksgiving vacation begins.

MAKERDEN NEWS

Mr. Kays spent five days at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston this past week for the first International Symposium of Academic Makerspaces (ISAM). MIT, Yale, Standford, Georgia Tech, Olin College, Carnegie Mellon, and Case Western Reserve University created this organization in efforts to provide road maps and best practices for Academic Makerspaces across the world. Roughly 300 Colleges with Makerspaces or who are looking to create Makerspaces were in attendance along with 2 high schools; Lyme-Old Lyme a top STEM school in the Nation and Ramona Convent which host the second all-girls' Makerspace in California.

During his time at the symposium, Mr. Kays had the opportunity to connect with many academics and industry representatives like Dr. Culpepper, MIT's Maker Czar, Dr. Wilczynski, Deputy Dean of Applied Engineering at Yale, Stephanie Santoso from the InfoSys foundation who formerly served as Senior Advisor for Making at the House, and many other experts in the field. During discussions, many colleges expressed interest in high school girls with Makerspace experience with both Yale and MIT looking to add sections to their college applications that address the Maker movement. It would seem that Ramona Convent is on the leading edge of this great movement! #MAKErevolution

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS - POTENTIAL ON-SITE ADMISSIONS PROGRAM OPPORTUNITY

If your daughter is planning on applying to Mount Saint Mary's University and cannot wait to hear back from admissions, Mr. Chavarria has a wonderful opportunity for her.  There will be an on-site admissions program at Ramona on Tuesday, December 6th.  In order for this to take place, we will need at least 7 seniors to take part in this opportunity.  For more information, please contact Mr. Chavarria at achavarria@ramonaconvent.org.

UPDATES FROM THE GUIDANCE & COLLEGE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

  • The presenters at the college financial aid meeting last week were from Lafayette College and College of St. Benedict, and they were excellent.  Parents who attended found the information very helpful.  We cannot reproduce their power point presentation for you since it is their own intellectual property, but I have made print copies of my own materials which I gave out at the meeting.  If you ask your daughter to stop by my office I will be happy to give her a copy to bring home to you so you can see the material that was covered. With college costs rising steadily, I know financing your daughter's education is a concern.  I hope these materials will help you understand the process more completely.
  • The absolute deadline to submit applications online to the UC and CSU systems is midnight on November 30.  Please help your daughter avoid application disappointment by encouraging her to allow plenty of time to complete the applications and submit them.
  • Many parents of seniors have already submitted the FAFSA which must be completed in order to qualify for college tuition aid.  Although the final deadline is March 2, we do not recommend waiting very much longer since it is possible your daughter may qualify but not get aid because the college runs out of money.  Students are more likely to receive money if they get the FAFSA in early.
  • Many seniors have expressed concern that their Cal Grants are on hold.  They are on hold only until they graduate from high school.  You and they can see the Cal Grant information by creating a Web Grant account at https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/logon.asp.
  • Many private colleges and universities require students to file the CSS Profile if they want institutional money from the college itself.  This should be completed immediately and can be accessed at the College Board website.  It can be a lengthy form, so please allow time to complete it.
  • We have now held the last of our three college application workshops after school in the computer lab.  Students who attended say they have found them very helpful and are less stressed.
  • December is the last month seniors can take the ACT or SAT and have it count for college.  Students need to make sure they ask the testing agency to send their scores to all of the colleges where they plan to apply.  Scores must come from the ACT or the College Board, not from the student or her high school.

NOW OPEN: 2017 GE-REAGAN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

High school seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship are invited to apply for the 2017 GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program. This program annually provides college-bound students with $10,000 renewable scholarships-up to $40,000 total per recipient–and supports them as they lead and serve in college and beyond.

Applications for the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program will be accepted online until January 5, 2017. Additional information, eligibility requirements, and a link to the application are available online
