RCSS News & Events

Image

It is a well-known fact of history that when the phone rang, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was sitting in the Oval Study, on the White House's second floor, examining his stamp collection.  The time was 1:47 p.m. The day was Dec. 7, 1941.  Across the country and thousands of miles away, Japanese bombs were raining on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Ships were sinking. Men were dying. The secretary of the Navy was calling with the news.  In that privacy of his office, without a grand audience, the president's response was spontaneous and unrestrained: "No!"  Yesterday we commemorated the 75th anniversary of that day of infamy and also remembered those many troubled parts of our world where people have not known peace for a very long time.  May our prayer be: Let there be peace on earth!

RAMONA CONVENT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COLLEGE BOARD'S AP CAPSTONE PROGRAM

Ramona Convent is one of only three Catholic high schools in the Los Angeles area to be selected by the College Board to implement AP Capstone—an innovative diploma program that encourages students to develop skills that matter for college and life—research, collaboration, and communication.

The AP Capstone program consists of two courses taken in sequence: AP Seminar, which will be offered at Ramona Convent beginning in fall 2017, and AP Research, which will be added to the curriculum the following year.  These courses complement the in-depth, subject-specific study of the 27 AP and Honors courses already part of the Ramona curriculum.

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on the AP Seminar and AP Research assessments as well as on four additional AP exams of their choosing will earn the AP Capstone Diploma. This signifies their outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills.

According to Ms. Mansell, "In the past three years, the College Board has recognized 95 Ramona students as AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Honor, AP Scholars with Distinction, and AP National Scholars. The innovative approach of the AP Capstone program complements our strong AP program by giving our students the opportunity to delve into their interests and passions in depth. Thorough interdisciplinary, independent research, students will sharpen the critical reading, writing, and thinking skills required for success in college."

CARING SCHOOLS INITIATIVE AND MAKING CARING COMMON SURVEY REQUEST

Congratulations to Ramona, and especially to Ms. Green, who planned Kindness Week at Ramona. Our program has been highlighted in the Harvard Graduate School of Education Making Caring Common newsletter this month! Click here to read the full article!

We have again partnered with the Caring Schools Initiative and Making Caring Common, a project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education to promote caring, safe, and respectful schools.

The main goal of this initiative is to learn more about how students, teachers, and parents perceive our school environment and to develop responses to make Ramona an even better place to be.

The survey includes questions about our core values, school climate, safety, bullying, school connectedness, respect for diversity, and caring relationships. This year the survey also includes a section on social media, which is focused on how young people are using social media in constructive ways as well as the guidance they are hearing (or not) from the adults in their lives.

As parents, you are extremely important members of the community, and your thoughts will help us promote safety, caring, and respect. Please help by completing this brief and anonymous survey.  Our students and faculty are also taking an adapted version of the  survey.

Please follow this link to complete the survey. It should take fewer than 10 minutes

For more information about Making Caring Common visit www.makingcaringcommon.org For questions about the survey, contact Ms. Mansell.  Thank you!

FALL CONCERT

Last Friday, Ramona's musicians performed a beautiful concert at San Marino Community Church, ushering in the holiday season for an appreciative audience.  Ramona's choir, handbell ensemble, and Chamber Singers rang and sang beautifully, bringing passion and beauty to their performances.  From lovely, lyrical ballads to silly songs and Christmas carols, Ramona's talented musicians brought joy and hope to our corner of the world. It was a wonderful evening!

MOTHER DAUGHTER TEA

Thank you to the sophomore class and their moderators (Ms. Green and Ms. Argueta) for the planning, preparation, and presentation of a beautiful tea for the Seniors and their mothers (and other guests).  All were delighted by the beautifully decorated room the warm cheery atmosphere and the excellent service.  It goes without saying the everyone appreciated the culinary skills of our Master Chef Francois Laborie and the members of the culinary club who got up early and  came to bake fresh scones and make tea sandwiches for this special event.

MUSIC & CHARITY  CLUB SHARES THE TRUE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

On Saturday, December 3, a group of thirty Ramona students brought the joy of Christmas songs and handmade cards to the senior residents at Santa Teresita Manor and Good Shepherd Cottage in Duarte.  This Christmas Caroling outreach was initiated by the Music and Charity Club, who also invited their fellow Ramona sisters to participate.  The event was also sponsored by GPhomestay, who provided the shuttle bus and the lunch that revived everyone at the end of our two hour caroling tour.

The Ramona carolers performed for 35 residents at the Manor and then caroled through the hallways and in the rooms of those who were bedridden. The joy and appreciation of the seniors was very touching for all who participated. We were the first group at the Manor to bring the sounds of Christmas this year, and together we stirred up the true spirit of Christmas in all our hearts!

RAMONA FARM PROJECT UNDERWAY

The skies parted on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, giving a group of student and parent volunteers enough time to make some improvements to the Ramona Farm.  Headed by student Alessandra Soto '19, as part of a Girl Scout Gold Award service project, we gathered for a few hours to clean out and raise up planting beds, clean and refurbish the green house, and learn about new planting techniques.  About 15 students were present either to add extra hours to their service resumes or just to stop by to lend a helping hand.  If you would like to help out on the farm or donate time, plants, or supplies please feel free to contact Mr. Laborie at flaboire@ramonaconvent.org
