NINTH GRADE HONORS ENGLISH PUBLISHES COLLECTION OF WORK

Image

The ninth grade Honors English class (from the graduation class of 2020) is proud to announce the publication of a collection of their short stories.  The book is entitled Long Story Short, and it is available through Amazon for $10.00.  The stated author is Ramona Convent Class of 2020; search words include "Ramona Convent," "Class of 2020," " short stories,"  and "ninth grade."

Long Story Short is a collection of short stories (plus one play and one poem)  written by students in Mrs. Barnheiser's 2016-17 ninth grade Honors English class at Ramona Convent Secondary School.

The students encourage you to buy their book because they believe you will enjoy  the creations they have produced; Mrs. Barnheiser certainly did.

HAWAII RAFFLE

The deadline to turn in Hawaii Raffle tickets was originally Friday, April 14; however, campus will be closed then.  The deadline has been extended to Monday, April 17th. If you have misplaced your ticket form, there are extras in the main office or you can just order on line.  Several times in the last few years, parents have been the winners.  This may be your year, but if you don't buy a ticket, you don't have a chance to win.

LA FETE DONATIONS

Image

Thank you to those parents who have sent in your auction donations.  There will be lots of wonderful baskets for attendees to bid on.  If you are a senior parent, this is your chance to bid on front row seats at graduation!  Other live auction items include a luxury box at the Staples Center for a game or tickets to the 2018 Rose Parade…and many more interesting items.  Again, if you don't buy a ticket, you can't bid on these items!  The deadline for purchasing tickets to attend LaFete is Friday, April 21.

SERVICE DAY FIELD TRIP - THURSDAY, APRIL 13TH

Tomorrow, the entire Ramona student body will be working at the L.A. Food Bank for our Service Thursday project.  All students are required to turn in a permission slip and liability waiver in order to work at the food bank.  Students must report to homerooms at 8:15 a.m. so we can take roll.  They should wear free dress so they don't mind getting dirty, closed-toed shoes, and a Ramona T shirt and/or sweatshirt for pictures.  A water canteen is recommended.  Snacks will be provided.  Everyone will return to Ramona by 12:30 p.m..

EXCITING MAKERDEN UPDATE

Image

We are excited to share some big news!  A couple of months back we applied for a grant from the Ahmanson Foundation to purchase equipment for our MakerDen.  Two weeks ago a representative from the Foundation visited and toured the space to find out more about the program we plan to offer. Since then we have anxiously awaited their decision which came this past Friday.  In an unprecedented move, the Ahmanson Foundation was so pleased with our program that instead of granting us the $15,000 dollars we requested,  they granted us our entire equipment budget of $58,200!  Mr. Kays, his NINJAS (Need Info Now Just Ask), and the Ramona community were blown away by their decision but excited to fast forward our timeline!  This will allow for the purchase of CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, and more!

TheMakerDen is currently up and running with a wonderful staff of NINJAS. These fabulous student volunteers are comprised of two Supervisors, Emily Echeverri and Christine Nguyen, and a support staff of Celine Vazquez, Frederica Liu, and Claire Sauter.  These young ladies are trained to assist students with ANYTHING they want to build.

The Den is open to all on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. for open build time where students can come 3D print, sew, construct, and program any personal project they want. ALL THIS IS FREE!!!

Our new grant can only be used on equipment and not expendables. Thus, with the timeline accelerated we now also have some needs that we are hoping the Ramona community can accommodate and help round out our space.  Currently we need build materials like screws, nails, bolts, washers, plywood, lumber, and PVC pipes plus fittings 2" and below.  They can be new or very gently used and stored.

Wood Screws (100 each of the following types and size):

#6 x 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2" screws

#8 x 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2" screws

Bolts and Nuts

M4 / 5 / 6 Stainless Steel Phillips Pan Head Bolts, Screws, Nuts, Flat and Locking Washers

Stainless Steel Flat Washers M2 M2.5 M3 M4 M5 M6 M8 M10

M2 M3 M4 Male Female Brass Spacer Standoff Screw Nut

Nails

4 packages of Ansen Tools AN 104 Nail Assortment Value Pack

Plywood

Two ½" thick 4' by 8' sheet

Lumber

8 each 1" x 2" x 4'

8 each 1" x 4" x 4'

8 each 2" x 4" x 4'

If you have these in excess from a project you completed or want to donate them we would greatly appreciate it!  It is an exciting time for the MakerDen which we hope to turn into the premier All Girls workshop for creativity, design, and entrepreneurship.

SUMMER INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE PROGRAM (SITES) OPPORTUNITY

Attention, juniors and seniors.  There is a wonderful opportunity to complete a 6-week paid summer internship with the City of Los Angeles.  Students will participate in the SITES program with the Bureau of Sanitation. If you are interested in the sciences, i.e. Engineering, then this program is for you. The deadline for all applications is April 15, 2017. Click here to learn more!

SUMMER 2017 FINANCIAL LITERACY BOOTCAMP

Financial Literacy is the ability to understand how money works in the world: how someone manages to earn it or make it, how that person manages it, how he/she invests it (turn it into more), and how that person donates it to help others.

The Loyola Marymount University Save-It-Forward initiative provides an intensive four-day educational program introducing high school students to the fundamentals of saving, budgeting, and investing money. Its mission is to build a happier and more prosperous world through financial literacy education.

Last summer, over 75 of our fellow Catholic high school students participated in this great program on the LMU campus. It is a four-day Financial Literacy program, subsidized by Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko's. The camp, workbook, parking, and daily lunch are included in the $20.00 registration fee.

For more information and to register visit www.saveitforwardinitiative.com.
